About Us

Our beliefs and why our company was founded

Our Beginnings

By complete random chance the first walk took place along the coast in Deal. It was a one-off favour for a Carers’ organisation but by the time we’d walked from one pub to another along the beautiful coastal path, the 11 unpaid carers who took part persuaded the volunteers to do another one.  A total of 52 people turned up to that one. That was 2016 and Stepping Out obviously had become a thing.

Our history

Our carers and those they support have been directly responsible for shaping Stepping Out walks in ways that make most sense for them. Carers asked to be able to come on their own or with the person they care for. Some needed free transport to get to the venues. They wanted lunch to chat and relax after the physical exertions. They needed to feel part of a welcoming community. They definitely appreciated the walk leaders and volunteers who kept them safe and were great for chatting. They wanted lunch, including cake, as a special time to bond post-exercise. They wanted something that could overcome the lack of time, motivation and isolation that is so often the fate of unpaid carers. So that is what we have continued to do, expanding from Kent into Greater Manchester, Doncaster and Hertfordshire. Now we’re apart of the vital NHS Social Prescribing campaign.

Meet our team members

Our wonderful team bring a wealth of experience, expertise and passion to support carers in accessing our walks, including our very own four-legged friends, Bernard and his pal Banksey, who join many of the walking adventures too.
